A mulch is a layer of material applied as a skin over the soil and has many advantages over leaving the space bare. Loose mulches maintain a more even soil temperature, that is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than naked ground. The need for watering is reduced, because moisture cannot evaporate from the soil so readily. Mulches also suppress the weeds and are particularly useful when planting hedgerows and trees.
