Tree planting & supply

With more and more people becoming aware of the environmental benefits of planting trees and encouraging birds and wildlife, Michael, advises that creating additional hedgerows on your property will not only improve the environment but will also add to your privacy.  Hedging trees should be planted in double rows, eighteen inches apart.  The second row can be staggered to produce a dense solid barrier in the shortest possible time.  Alternatively trees can be planted in single rows.  Before planting, it is always best to dig a trench three foot wide and to work in well rotted horse manure or organic material.  Some bonemeal should be added and mixed in thoroughly.  To encourage dense hedgerow growth, Andrew recommends cutting back new trees, encouraging them to branch out from their base.  Bare root trees should be pruned between 12 and 13 inches from the ground.  Varieties ideal for hedging include hawthorn, beech, hazel and English oak and saplings ranging from 14 to 22 inches cost just 25p each.

Planting mature trees add impact and height to a garden, can cast desirable shade or provide a feature on a boundary or in the middle of a lawn.  It is very important to choose a tree with care to ensure that it does not outgrow its space, deprive nearby plants of nutrients or cause any structural damage.  Michael visits specialist nurseries in the U.K. and Italy personally selecting shrubs and trees up to 30 feet in height for his customers.
