LAWN SEEDING. When sowing a new lawn good initial site preparation prevents problems later on and makes the lawn easy to look after. Dig the ground or rotovate deeply removing any weeds and spread good organic material over the area and dig it in. Sow a general fertilizer, such as blood, fish and bone and rake well in. As you rake, continue levelling the soil and remove any stones and debris. Tread the area well to consolidate the soil and rake again. Sow in late spring or early autumn and rake the seed into the soil surface, then water if rain does not fall within 24 hours.
LAYING TURF. This can be done any time during the winter from mid-autumn until late spring, except when the soil is very wet and muddy or during cold, frosty weather. Cultivated turf is expensive but will be weed free and of superb quality.
